Amazon’s second generation Kindle coming soon
Rumours are flying that a second generation Kindle is on the way and will be a significant departure from the first design and aimed at the burgeoning college textbook market.
Insider sources have been claiming that the replacement model will be thinner and have a more attractive design which has me thinking of a scaled up iPod Touch (but then I like Apple stuff). As technology has moved on since the launch of the first Kindle the new design should incorporate better display technology, possibly a full-size screen and a more attractive user interface to match the product design. It is believed that Amazon does not plan to incorporate an MP3 module.
Amazon representative Kinley Campbell confirms there will be updates:
“We’re committed to Kindle — there will be a second version, a fifth version, etc. but we haven’t announced a timeline for a second generation device.”
Campbell went on to confirm that there will also not be a video facility.
The design has been led by a designer from Frog Design who gave a very critical and public hammering to the Kindle at its initial launch in November 2008 — looks like it payed off!
The price is anticipated to be at a discount to the first version at around $300 (the current version is $360) mirroring Apple’s experience who found that a $400 price tag deterred casual users.
