Papyrus E-Book replaces paper, pen, classrooms…

April 20th, 2008 by Steve

We haven’t covered many e-book products but this Papyrus concept surfaced recently and compared to most its a bit special. This reader from Green Grass is aimed at replacing student notebooks no-less and its hoped it will cost less than $100 despite packing an E-Ink screen and network facilities.

Papyrus E-Book

The Papyrus relies on a stylus from written input and uses hand-writing recognition software. Users can also tag content displayed on the device which have the same effect as on social networking sites such as Facebook and Bebo. The facilities offered by the Papyrus aim to cover the following real-world objects:

  • Textbooks
  • Notebooks
  • Calculator
  • Blackboard

The battery life of thirty hours or so means that the Papyrus has a useful battery life of three days or so between charges thanks to the use of the E-Ink low-powered screen.

Don’t expect to see the Papyrus in stores in the near future but rather as a sign of things to come.

Digital publishing isn’t about the hardware–it’s about the features, the special capabilities that digital books provide that simply aren’t possible with paper.

What special features you might ask?

That’s the problem. Most digital books, e-book readers, and PDF files don’t provide any special features. They just try to duplicate the paper page in digital format.

    That’s not good enough.

To be successful digital books will have to fully utilize the power of the computer and the Internet. Think of a book where photos come to life as video and illustrations turn into animations. That’s not a hardware issue–it’s a conceptual issue and a software issue.
