Sony DSLR-A700 plays nice with your other gadgets

This camera, Sony says, is aimed at “photo enthusiasts” but beasts a specifications many pro cameras would envy. The sensor is 12.2 megapixel and includes dual noise-reduction ON THE CHIP! The analogue signal is processed before A/D conversion and then the digital data is processed again.

  • Maximum shutter speed: 1/8,000 th of a second
  • Coreless motor
  • Five frames per second
  • 18 frame continuous shooting in RAW format
  • Unlimited frames continuous shooting in JPEG fine or standard format

Darren Rowse’s review of the A700 states that:

…The new camera features fourteen creative styles, including night view, autumn leaves or vivid, which can be selected to enhance images. These effects can then be fine-tuned by customizing contrast, sharpness, zone matching and other parameters.


There is an extensive array of customization options to personalize the camera to match shooting styles. The unit’s quick navigation interface can be accessed instantly with the four-way multi-selector, and selected parameters can be adjusted directly by control dials…

The A700 also comes with a remote image capture application which when installed on your PC enables you to control the shutter and focusing mechanism from your desktop via USB. Images are written to the PC, bypassing the memory card.

An HDMI output port is also included so you can hook your camera up to your HD TV set and if that happens to be a BRAVIA LCD HD photos will be optimized for viewing with Sony’s PhotoTV HD mode.

The following lenses will be introduced with the A700:

  • DT 16-105 mm f3.5 – 5.6 (standard kit lens)
  • DT 18 – 250 mm f3.5 – 6.3 lens
  • A speciality 70 -300 mm f4.5 – 5.6 SSM G telephoto lens with USM in 2008

The A700 is also compatible with most Minolta Maxxum mount lenses as well as Sony lenses.

The A700 has separate slots for Memory Stick Duo media cards and CompactFlash Type I/II media cards up to 8GB.

US prices for the camera will be as follows (other prices are yet to be announced)

  • The DSLR-A700 camera body £690 ($1,400, €1,017)
  • DT 16 – 105 mm lens £286 ($580, €421)
  • DT 18-250 mm lens £271 ($550, €399)
  • The DSLR-A700K kit with an 18-70 mm lens £740 ($1,500, €1,089)
  • DSLR-A700P kit with the 16-105 mm lens £937 ($1,900, €1,380)

The camera body and DSLR-A700K kit will ship in October and the DSLR-A700P kit in November.
