Mamiya DL33 camera — for people who think MegaPixels are everything
March 19th, 2009 by SteveBuilding on the success of the DL28 and what Mamiya claims to be requests from professional photographers throughout the U.S. Mamiya is launching the DL33 — a 33 megapixel camera that sure to prvide some impetus to the ongoing megapixel race.
The DL33′s specs are similar to those of the DL28 including the 3.5 inch touchscreen. The difference is in the 36 x 44 mm 33 megapixel sensor. This means:
- 16-bit capture
- 12-stop dynamic range
- ISO settings from 50 to 800
It also has a faster autofocus motor and an improved user interface.
With resulting image files between 67 and 190 MB you’re going to need some hefty storage too.
Jeff Karp, Mamiya Product Marketing Manager says:
“In the world of medium format digital photography, many photographers have to choose between price and performance. The new Mamiya DL33 Digital Camera System offers the best of both worlds by providing medium format performance at a price that serious photographers can afford.”
“… a price that serious photographers can afford” is, apparently, $20,000 since this is what Mamiya is charging for this medium format camera.
You don’t just get lots of pixels though. There’s also a number of professional features you won’t find in any other camera systems such as a pixel size of 72 microns. At 36 x 48 mm that makes the DL33′s sensor twice the size of a full-frame DSLR. Larger pixels are also generally associated with greater colour accuracy and tonal richness.
The body has a coreless motor for greater torque and smoother running giving faster, more accurate auto-focussing.
Other specs for the camera include:
- 7 micron pixels with its 48x36mm sensor, twice that of traditional 35mm full-frame
- Integration of the Mamiya 645AFD III camera system and Leaf Aptus-II 7 digital back
- 67MB RAW files
- Compactflash, Firewire
