Mobile phones challenge traditional Digtal Cameras

Camera phones have now developed to such a high degree that some are comparing them to digital cameras of the more traditional compact and SLR designs.

LG Electronics announced on Thursday the launch of the Nyx (KU990) in European markets this before the end of August. The Nyx sports a 5-megapixel camera and a touch-screen. The camera can record video at high speed and playback in slow motion.

On the same day Sony Ericsson revealed the K770 with its 3.2 megapixel camera to be launched before the end of this year.

Samsung recently launched its SGH-G600 and Nokia its N95 in Europe and both of these have 5 megapixel cameras.

Europe is now the world’s biggest market for high-end camera-phones. In fact Europe has now become so important to the mobile industry that no maker will give the high ground to the competition and this has made the region the launch pad for mobile phone technology to the rest of the world. “We expect thet 5-megapixel camera phones will spread globally from this quater, led by the European markets.” said an LG official.

But does this mean that camera phones are challenging traditional format cameras such as SLR? The chief advantage of an SLR particularly is the lens which is typically 30% of the volume of the camera for even the smallest lenses. Camera phones will never have comparable lenses to traditional format cameras and will therefore not be able to offer the creative range or practicality of lowlight photography with their tiny pin-holes as a light source.

Camera phones can only compete in high light environments where light admission is not a problem and shallow depth of field is acceptable. Even if I upgrade to one of these cameras this year it will be a long time before I stop using my digital SLR.
