iPhone unlocked!
It has been only six weeks or so and the national monopolies negotiated by Apple in the US, UK, Germany and France has been broken. Apple has attempted to tie the iPhone to AT&T, O2, T-Mobile and Orange in these countries respectively. A new software hack gives iPhone owners the freedom to use the device with their existing or a competing GSM network.
According to Engadget.com which is showing a handy movie demonstrating the successful exploit the unofficial patch took a few minutes to install and caused no harm to the iPhone. At the end of the installation the demonstrator was able to use the US iPhone to make a call on the T-mobile network. It also seemed that the EDGE-support and SMS service remained in tact.
Certain AT&T-specific services such as Visual voicemail obviously does not survive the transfer but normal voicemail remained usable.
Interestingly the hack survives upgrades and re-installs - as has been demonstrated by the re-installation of the OS using the v1.0.2 update.
Summing up, Engadget’s Ryan Block said:
“Again: we can confirm with 100% certainty that iPhoneSIMfree.com’s software solution completely SIM unlocks the iPhone, is restore-resistant, and should make the iPhone fully functional for users outside of the US.“
