Sony suggests iTunes movies rival
September 4th, 2007 by SteveToday during comments to the press Shigenori Yoshida suggested that Sony may build a rival to Apple’s iTunes movie store making no suggestion as to how certain this prospect was. The interesting point about this anouncement is that none of the following Sony devices can play copy-protected movie formats:
- Video Walkman players
- PlayStation 3
- PSP
This may either limit the service to the Bravia LCD TVs and other non-portable devices where the integration of a copy-protection layer would be for feasible.
This information comes just days after Sony announced the closing of itd Connect store put down to the fact that the company insisted on using its own proprietary ATRAC format which limited playback to it’s own devices and software. Following its closure Sony released a slew of devices supporting the WMA format and making them compatible with the majority of online music stores.
