Samsung has announced a range of third generation Blu-ray players at CES. The DVD-H1080 recalls the ‘pebble’ appearance, and the BD-P4600 is Samsung’s first player to show the ‘touch of color’ design. The chief design criterion seems to be the thinnes of the device at 1.5 inches allowing it to be hung on a wall.

The DVD-H1080 is itself only just larger than a DVD but supports 1080p upscaling and playback of DivX movies, JPEG photos and MP3 songs via USB.

The HT-BD7200 is a conventional setup and uses discrete half-height satellites and a subwoofer punching out 400W and virtual 5.1. The Blu-ray reader itself handles 802.11n Wi-Fi and Profile 2.0 playback.

The BD-P4600 mentioned above is only 1.5 inches thick and so can fit into some AV racks or be mounted on a wall. It also has a touch-sensitive control paneland the full Blu-ray Profile 2.0 feature set including internet access via Ethernet or 802.11n Wi-Fi through the bundled adapter. Samsung says that this adds access to Netflix streaming videos and Pandora radio stations (must be old copy!)

The HT-BD8200 is claimed to be the first Blu-ray sound bar to integrate the full movie player within the main bar. This generates virtual 5.1 channel surround sound and bass via a wireless sub-woofer. The system also incorporates an iPod dock and has the same networking features as the stand-alone Blu-ray readers

The BD-P3600 offers another alternative for those seeking an integrated home theatre. It sports all the features of the BD-P4600 but with a much more conservative casing and with the addition of 7.1-channel bitstream surround sound via analogue or uncompressed PCM signals.

Samsung doesn’t give us any pricing or any specific availability information for any of these Blu-ray products, but does promise the DVD-H1080 will be with us in the first half of the year.
