New Denon upscaling DVD players
September 9th, 2007 by SteveDenon’s award-winning DVD 1930 had a strong reputation so following it will be a tall order for the company’s new 1940 model. Fortunately the 1940 comes with a host of features and image quality control parameters that videophiles will love.
The 1740 is the new entry model in Denon’s range and features full HD upscaling of current DVDs to a HDTV via its HDMI port. Component video hook-ups are also available for sending lower quality images to legacy TV units. Denon’s site lists the following feature set:
- Video scaler to 480p,720p, 1080i and now Full-HD 1080p.
- 12 bit 108 MHz high-specification Video DACs for high picture quality.
- 24bit / 192kHz Burr Brown PCM1782 Audio DACs for dynamic range.
- DivX ULTRA Certified (Version 3.11, 4, 5, 6. VOD video content).
- GREEN ECO STANDBY – 0.8 watt – half last model’s figure of 1.5w.
- Detachable mains lead.
- HDMI video output, with HDMI Black Level enhance and HDMI multi-channel audio transfer.
- Reinforced chassis, transport base and top plate to minimize and absorb harmful vibration.
- Separate analog & digital circuit boards to reduce cross-interference, plus discrete Video Circuitry.
- DTS, PCM and Dolby Digital data output.
- Brightness/Contrast/Colour/Gamma Correction/Sharpness.
- Aspect Ratio Function.
- Icon-based On-Screen Displays.
- MP3 & MP3 VBR/WMA/JPEG/KPCD Playback.
- 2mB Buffer Memory.
- Resume, Slow, & Repeat Play (A-B Chapter Track Disc).
- Random Play and Program Play.
The DVD 1740 is to be priced at £150.
The DVD 1940 boasts five Image Mode memories so that you can tweak the imaging parameters until you find the best image for your viewing tastes. Also featured are interlaced and progressive video DAC’s as well as a decent audio specification from its PCM-1738 Burr Brown Audio DACs. The 1940 model has the same basic specification of the 1740 plus the following:
- DVD-Audio/Video, Super Audio CD Universal Player.
- 24-bit, 192-kHz High Resolution Audio D/A Converters.
- Progressive Scan featuring DCDi by Faroudja.
- 12 bit, 216 MHz High Resolution Video D/A Converters.
- HDMI/Component (Interlace) Parallel video outputs.
- 2 MB Buffer Memory.
- Picture Adjustment function.
- CD-R/RW and DVD-R/RW (MP3 / Windows Media Audio 9 / JPEG / Kodak Picture CD/DivX) Playback (*2).
- Bass Management for HDMI Output.
