Dungeon Siege 3 coming to PCs, PS3s and X-Box 360s — and parties are back!
June 6th, 2008 by SteveDungeon Siege fans can look forward to the release of Dungeon Siege 3 according to an interview of Chris Taylor, head of Gas Powered Games and the designer behind Dungeon Siege, by the German branch of Eurogamer.com.
It seems that the production process of the game has progressed to some degree as some concrete information on the game is becoming available. Taylor says:
“There will be some things that are very much like Dungeon Siege 1 and 2, but some things will be simplified. I am done with multi-character parties; I really think that it’ s all going to be about a forty-five hero. It’ s too much to manage.”
Gamers have long been used to the concept of parties in RPG games — in fact it’s a feature most of us take for granted. But it seems from Taylor’s quote that any future Dungeon Siege 3 release will be played by a single character, something that we also see in Space Siege, another title that Gas Powered Games is working on.
A date has not been announced but it’s unlikely to be this year!
Update
It has been eighteen months since this interview took place and sadly the release of Dungeon Siege 3 seems as far off as ever. Given the probable release of Diablo 3 in late 2010 / early 2011 this probably wouldn’t be the best time for a release of a fantasy RPG rival anyway. It looks like we’ll have to hold our breaths or get our RPG fix somewhere else such as the expansion packs below if you haven’t tried them (details accurate on day of posting):

Further update – 7th June 2010
Square Enix has announced that it will partner with developer Obsidian Entertainment to bring Dungeon Siege 3 to 360, PS3 and PC. Gas Powered Games’ Chris Taylor will be in the mix to in an advisory role.
The Dungeon Siege 3 willincorporate an “all-new co-op multiplayer mode”, whatever that means along with the following features:
- For the first time, play Dungeon Siege on high-def consoles.
- Players will be able to adventure by themselves or with friends in co-op multiplayer.
- Uncover a deep story that only Square Enix and Obsidian Entertainment can deliver.
- Pick from unique and highly customizable character classes with a wide range of abilities to choose from.
- Recruit companions with unique personalities, abilities and views on the world around them.
- Players will have weighty decisions to make that will impact their alliances, enemies and the culmination of the story.
Did you see number 5! Yes it looks like parties have not been abandoned as feared by many DS fans following remarks by Chris Taylor himself — one massive mistake avoided!

All this news about my favorite games is just mind blowing. Glad to hear that there will be a Dungeon Siege III and Diablo III. Simply made my holidays a bit brighter. Thanks everyone.

For DS3, I’m hoping for an immense game world with an immense selection of Armour and weapons and spells. I want to get lost in this virtual world so don’t show borders on minimaps! Something along the lines of DS1 with some DS2 incorporated but not as flashy or childish.
Having a pet or adding one party member seems fine, though I have for the most part only used single characters. Character levels should max at 150 or 200 so game balancing is easier. Concepts of Elves, Humans, Dwarves, Dryads, Giants should be continued with possibly some more choices as well as dozens of skins. There should be more than 3 towns and definitely more than a handful of merchants. And tones of secret areas. The game world should be very deep because, despite the storyline, that is what will bring back the players.

Woot! i love these games. something that would be really cool is if they made a dark elf race, or like some sort of winged demon race. they really need to have a very wide rage of weapons and armour. and a very big world to explore. i love these games so i’m just throwing my ideas out there. i hope its better then the first to.
thanks chris.

I love Dungeon Siege, even better than Diablo. I thought it was superior to Diablo as you could pan around the characters, and the spells were more diverse. And I liked having 3 companions. Soon I will try it on harder levels, so I can maybe even carry a pet with me. Never tried that yet. I liked the 2nd one especially, with all of its goofy secondary quests, though some of them were a bit tedious, like the one where you had to talk to 18 different ghosts…. Can’t wait for 3 to come out. Should be exciting!

Do away with parties? Whoa! What the heck is the point of having multiple races if you can’t combine them into on party. I need a combat mage as well as a nature mage (wuss). I need my archer covering my mindless brute…what are you thinking?

Um… if this was really even announced, don’t you think we might have heard a little bit more about it by now?
From what I’ve read on a seperate article, Chris Taylor said that the game wasn’t even planned yet, and they were still tossing ideas around. So it’s not even official that it will come. If it does though, it better redeem the series. DS1 was a great RPG when it came out and gave a fresh new way to build up one’s character. DS2 was too Diablo-ish, and lacked some quality compared to DS1.
Anyway, here’s where I got that other article from:

First they release Supreme Commander 2, then hopefully they’ll release Dungeon Siege 3. To my great shame I’ve only finished Broken World an hour ago, but it hooked me to DS2 even more than before (off to do a FoS tomorrow). Please make DS3 a great successor, full of multiclassing possibilities.
FoS: Melee + Nature
BA: Ranged + Combat
Maybe a weapons master : Melee and Ranged
Maybe an elemental evoker : Nature and combat
Keep the great combat coming the likes of which Diablo can’t hope to compete

Kinda sad that the whole party feature is being removed. I still have the great memories of going to stonebridge and finding a wanna be nature mage to party with. But I do hope that Gas Powered Games can make some good features to combat and story. I also do hope they can make the world beaurtiful like in the first two games.
Good luck to Chris Taylor.

“I am done with multi-character parties; I really think that it’ s all going to be about a forty-five hero. It’ s too much to manage.”
There you have it folks so much for all that was innovative about DS and hope of ever seeing a genuine remake of the first game.
Which begs the question, what could possibly make this new game so unique and different from every other run of the mill fantasy rpg out there? Especially Diablo III.
The way I understand this comment is:
I'm done with being revolutionary and innovative, it's takes too much time, money and resources to make such a game.
How inspiring….

Party control seems to have diminished from DS1 through DS2 to what may be in DS3 if it is ever released. In DS 1 we have control over formation so that you could have, say, a '^' formation with your heaviest armoured characters at the front and archers and magic users behind. But even then if you had to retreat the '^' became a 'v', all your weaker people were now nearest to the enemy and usually they were wiped out.
I would have loved Gas Powered Games to have come up with a 'retreat mode' to keep parties in a sensible formation (just flip the current one) so that retreats can be made 'in good order'.

Taylor keeps making the wrong call.
The time for real time party RPG is here. People who have played WoW have shown that as in Dragon Age, people like to play their own Personal Little MMO boss fights.
DS2 is great fun with this. With ONE player….I dunno, sounds kinda lame, I mean won't everyone just play Diablo3 anyhow.
DS2 was ahead of its time also. AI and pathing actually *worked*. Chris, you make great game, but are making a wrong call to make it 1 character.
June 20th, 2010 at 4:01 pm
thank god they didn't get rid of the parties. i cannot wait for ds 3
June 20th, 2010 at 6:04 pm
Absolutely, it looks like common-sense prevailed.

Dungeon Siege is GR8!!!! I’ve been playing it for years (10plus), both DS 1 and 2 including the expansions. DS is original in the sense that you have a party, not an army nor a single fighter. Please do take your time with no. 3 and do include parties other wise i might aswell play some other game which does not have parties and there is thousands. The best is Dungeon Siege 2 when the party members actualy have conversation and when you change the party members, the conversation changes. Example: When you enter the temple of Xeria Deru says “I’m right behind you. If they kill you, i promise to disperse of your body in a descent manner” Thanks 4 a gr8 game!!!!

Me gets peeling its going to be a Diablo rip considering its change of pace.
If it is that just plain sucks nads!

Dungeon Siege always had good game play … it’s failure was inferior graphics compared to similar games. NOW .. that should be overcome.
