Time Capsule: Apple MacWorld keynote announcements
Steve Jobs chose to announce Time Capsule as the first of his tech announcements at MacWorld today. Time Capsule is an Airport Extreme -like product with an integrated hard disk which allows laptop users to make use of Time Machine, Apple’s proprietary backup solution, without the need of wires to connect to the backup volume.

The hard disk is “server grade” implying that it’s very reliable and will be available in February in two sizes: 1 TB and 500GB. The remainder of the workings comprise an 802.11n router and the whole package is wrapped in a Apple TV style box.
Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, said:
“Bring Time Capsule home, plug it in, click a few buttons on your Macs and voila — all the Macs in your house are being backed up automatically, every hour of every day. With Time Capsule and Time Machine, all your irreplaceable photos, movies and documents are automatically protected and incredibly easy to retrieve if they are ever lost.”
Time Capsule works seamlessly with Time Machine and so is capable of backing up any computer on the network running OS X Leopard or later. The following features are also present:
- Dual-band antennas for 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz frequencies
- Three Gigabit LAN ports
- One Gigabit Ethernet WAN port
- One USB 2.0 port
- Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA/WPA-2), 128-bit WEP encryption
- A built-in NAT firewall supporting NAT-PMP for features like Back to My Mac.
The Time Capsule will be priced at around £152 ($299, €201) and £254 ($499, €336) respectively.
