Garageband 4.1.1 now exports custom Ringtones!
Garageband 4.1.1 is a free update to the audio composition app in iLife, Apple’s suite of home media software. Apple’s web site simply says:
This update improves overall stability and addresses issues with file export to iPhone.
This is in fact a very coy way of saying that Apple has caved in to consumer demands and allowed iPhone users to make their own ringtones. Ringtones are limited to ten seconds and an iPhone must be connected for the export option to become available in the ’share’ menu.

The resulting file is exported to iTunes as a ringtone file which can then be synchronized with the iPhone. On the iPhone itself the ringtone is stored in a ‘Custom’ list.
This latest version of Garageband is available from www.apple.com/ilife/garageband/ and is free for users of iLife 08.
